Barb took a turn at making breakfast this morning—egg McMuffins.
Our adventure today took us to the Everglades National Parkwhich was created in 1947. We toured here last year and we were anxious to returnwith Barb and Jim. It was about a 2 ½ hour drive from Bonita Springs to the SharkValley visitors center.
We began our exploration with a 15 mile guided tram excursionthrough the saw grass wilderness with Park Ranger Sean.
The land areas are no more than 8 feet above sea level.
Thepark is home to a total of 3,066 species of birds.
Besides the birds, popular attractions are the vast numberof alligators that were commonly seen, not only around the trails at the visitorscenter, but throughout the entire tram ride.
Many of the alligators were sunning along the side of thetram trail with their tails actually on the roadway.
We were excited to see a mother alligator with her littlebabies around her. We were told that out of the 100-120 laid by an alligator, only two or three actually live to adulthood.
There are bicycles for rental and many people rode themalong the tram roadway. Barb and I agree that we would not feel verycomfortable riding bikes so close to the gators. Cordell and Jim were ready todo it in a heartbeat!
We stopped at a 65’ observation tower which provided aspectacular panoramic view.
Nearby we saw at least 9 alligators.
Barb and I couldn’t resist shopping in the visitors centerbefore we left.
While we were driving back from the park, we passed a
controlled burn. It covered a large area and I couldn’t imagine how it must be
when wild fires in some other places consume homes and other things in its path.
And a great part of the sky was filled with smoke that could be seen for miles.
We all enjoyed our day at the Everglades and when we went to sleep for the night it was not visions of sugar plums that we saw dancing in our heads!
ALLIGATORS!!!!!!!!!
