This morning we awoke early to pouring rain. After
consulting a weather app, we were confident that we would drive out of the rain
by afternoon. It was 41° when we left Wilson, NC at 8:00 a.m. It was heartening
to watch the outside temperature rise as we travelled southward. At 55°, we
began changing our layers of outer clothing.
We made a stop at the South Carolina Visitors Center.
I found an interesting sign at the snack area. It almost
seemed like I was in jail. A man was watching us from inside the Visitors Center
and I saw him laughing at me!
After driving 248 miles today, I saw palm trees for the
first time. We encountered some heavy, slow traffic north of the Georgia state
line, so we opted to get off the interstate and travel some smaller roads.
As we passed through the little town of Manning, South
Carolina, we were delighted to discover a mural on the side of a building which
depicts Pond Bluff on the Santee River.
We also saw cotton growing in a field and wondered why it
was not picked—or maybe it had been and we were seeing the leftovers.
So, we arrived in Georgia after 6 ½ hours driving time today. But we did spend additional time finding six geocaches.
After settling in our room for about an hour, we went to
dinner at a nearby restaurant. The food was excellent—oysters and gulf shrimp,
and of course, hushpuppies. Tomorrow we plan to be in Florida—our third day of
travel compared to the eight days it took us last year to travel the same
distance!
